So many people ask me about makeup choices for their skin type…
For those of you with oily skin and acne, I do understand that last thing you want to put on your face is another product, but it isn’t good for your skin to be unprotected. You need UV protection and many still need a natural-looking way to cover up the redness or spots.
So for oily, acne-prone skin, and especially for rosacea, I recommend mineral makeup. Mineral makeup is anti-inflammatory and weightless on the skin. After it sets, it provides a fresh natural look, fabulous coverage, and UVA/UVB protection. It comes in loose and pressed formulas. Pressed powder is better for your skin type because it provides more matte coverage. Loose powder will work but can accentuate large pores because it is more finely micronized.
The active ingredients in mineral makeup are zinc oxide and titanium dioxide which are excellent UV protectors and anti-inflammatory ingredients.
There are a lot of brands available now, and here some of my favs:
- Jane Iredale Mineral Cosmetics is my all-time favorite mineral makeup and has good choices for yellow undertones and ethnic skin. Their pressed powder goes on smoothly and gives an excellent finish. To buy, visit the Beauty Network here in SF on Geary and 22nd. Check out the site at http://www.shlomitskincare.com Their shop has a full display of product available and plenty of natural light so you can tell immediately whether you have an exact match.
- GloMinerals comes in pressed and loose foundation powders, and offers a hip assortment of lip and eye colors. http://www.glominerals.com/
- Color Science has an excellent product called Sunforgettable which is a clear SPF 30 powder that is perfect for men or anyone that does not want to wear “makeup”. Check out this link for more info: http://www.colorescience.com/1280×1024/flash/index.html
- Bare Escentuals is a good choice for those with light skin with a pink undertone. However, because it only comes in a loose formula, I do not recommend it as highly for those with large pores or very oily skin.
If you are on a budget, the good news is that many drugstore lines have created their own mineral makeup. Check out the new products from Almay, Neutrogena, and L’Oreal. The active ingredients are similar, and the price is right. The downside is that these brands do not offer the same variety of colors as the higher- end brands and you don’t have the opportunity to test them before you buy to make sure the color is an exact match. Also, most drugstore brands do not offer pressed formulas which give the best finish to oily skin.
Also, make sure you get a good brush! A high quality brush allows you to apply the makeup evenly and you get a better overall result. Jane Iredale and Glomineral brushes are excellent and worth the investment…!
